Website design elements, ads, and graphics need a little help to make your branded assets stand out from the crowd. Where do you want your customer to focus? The “rule of three” or “rule of thirds” is a simple design concept that draws attention to an intended focal point and can help build brand recognition.

Composition and website design in thirds

What is the rule of three? It’s pretty simple if you think of each project start as a grid that can be broken up into thirds.

When graphic and web designers begin with a blank space, they might imagine a grid made of nine equal parts. There are three vertical sections and three horizontal sections that overlap. (Think of a blank tic-tac-toe grid.) The overlapping thirds create four intersections in the space. These intersections are the focal points of the image.

With these points in mind, the designer moves the image in the space until the focal point is located on one of the four intersecting lines either one-third or two-thirds from the edge of the image. The rule of three is an important concept to apply in order to create an appealing and memorable design that directs the eye to a specific element. Use it to create focus on a logo, a photo element, or a contextually important part of your image that reinforces the associated messaging and brand.

Limit text color choices

Many graphics also include text. Once your image composition is set to draw a potential customer’s eye to an intentional focal point, text can be used to give them more information. Text colors should also be limited to three. Choose one dominant color and no more than two complementary colors for your text. These colors paired with a specific font (usually one or two, not three fonts) should be consistent with your brand.
